Spaying and Neutering

Spaying and neutering helps with population control, behaviour, and reduced health risks for pets.

Annex Animal Hospital provides spay and neuter surgery services for dogs and cats. Every patient is cared for and monitored by our professional, gentle, animal-loving team of veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians. Each patient receives supportive care such as intravenous fluid therapy, warm blankets and medications for pain control while in our hospital. Our spay/neuter patients are usually discharged from the hospital on the same day as the surgery is performed. You will receive complete care instructions and post-operative pain medications once they are discharged from the hospital by one of our registered veterinary technicians. We will be more than happy to answer any of your questions about the post-surgical recovery process.

Why is it important to neuter/spay my dog?

Pets are spayed or neutered at approximately six months of age. Female pets undergo an ovariohysterectomy which is the removal of the ovaries and uterus. With female pets, estrus (known as “heat”) will be eliminated and they will no longer experience the “heat” cycle. This surgery also reduces the chance of female pets developing ovarian cysts, breast tumours, and uterine infections as they age. Male pets may display significantly less aggression and territorial behaviours such as urine spraying in male cats and urine marking in male dogs. Male pets will also have a decreased chance of developing perineal hernias and certain types of cancer later in life. Having pets spayed or neutered will not only benefit your companion and household but will also have a positive impact on the community as it reduces the incidence of unexpected puppies and kittens.

How much does it cost to neuter/spay a dog?

Spay/Neuter fees are based on age, weight and health status. Please contact the hospital for a full explanation and estimate of costs entailed in this surgical procedure.
